Initially, the English Springer Spaniel was an offensive bird dog, but they have several uses today. First and foremost, they have become popular family dogs.
The medium-sized dog breed has been bred for different purposes. They are either produced to become "working dogs or "show dogs".
Regardless of which edition you get, you get an English Springer Spaniel with a vibrant personality.
In addition to being offensive bird dogs, they are suitable for various dog sports, including agility. They are also commonly found as sniffer dogs or service dogs. Their unique sense of smell makes finding drugs and bombs seem like a breeze.
What characterises the mentality of an English Springer Spaniel?
They are social dogs who love to be with humans and other dogs.
They are best suited for people who love long walks in nature. An English Springer Spaniel is a perfect hiking buddy and who is kind, active, open and lively. They love being the centre of attention.
They are not known for their braveness and are therefore ill-suited for people who are looking for a watchdog. Aggressiveness is not a common trait among them. Still, the Norwegian Spaniel Club notes that they can be pretty wild, so it is essential to be consistent and determined in upbringing.

How much maintenance does an English Springer Spaniel require?
The beautiful coat has a moderate need for care. They need cutting and trimming about four times a year. Skilful hairdresser abilities are not required, and this maintenance the owners themselves can learn to perform.
Otherwise, weekly brushing is required. Bathe as needed.
Pay attention to the hair in their inner ear - it must be maintained to avoid infections.
English Springer Spaniels are generally healthy dogs.
Hip dysplasia, which is a widespread condition in many breeds, rarely occurs in this one.
Various eye diseases, including PRA, cataracts and glaucoma, are found in some individuals. English Springer Spaniel is also predisposed to skin problems and a weaker immune system.
Healthy individuals have a life expectancy of 10-14 years.
