Great Danes are large dogs that express both elegance and strength, thanks to their powerful physique.
Do not let their appearance fool you: they are not hostile or dangerous. On the contrary, they are friendly, gentle beings who are faithful and devoted to their owners. They are often referred to as "gentle giants", and "the' Apollo of dogs".
Originally they were used as guarding- and hunting dogs, but now exclusively as companion/family dogs. Some of their instincts still remain - for example, you can expect a Great Dane to notify you when strangers arrive.
If you are considering getting a Great Dane, you should be aware of this:
- Remember, they are big dogs, and big dogs require a lot of food. In other words, they are not the cheapest option.
- Great Danes grow extremely fast - they can be fully grown at seven months old.
- Despite the fact that most of them are healthy, we have a fairly short life expectancy.
Important with lead training
Their gentle disposition makes them relatively easy to raise. But the right upbringing is essential. Especially important is to practice walking on a lead. Remember that they are massive dogs weighing up to 80 kilos. If they choose to pull the lead, it can be challenging to hold back.
This is also something to be aware of when left with children (having said that, they are known to be careful around them).
Their size means they require a lot of personal space. A tiny flat will be challenging on both parts.
The Great Dane is a gentle dog and usually gets along well with other dogs and pets. They are friendly to all people, although barking may occur when strangers arrive a the front door.
Great Danes love pleasing their owners and will require a fair chunk of attention from them. If they feel like cuddling, you can be sure that they will express themselves - often by poking their owners' arms with their massive heads. Some individuals also love to lie on the couch.
Health
Great Danes have a relatively short lifespan of 8-10 years. Fortunately, they are a healthy breed and will usually live their life to the fullest.
