DOGBREEDS
Newfoundland dog
Do not be intimidated by our bear-like appearance; we are kind as the day is long.
Our friendly and easygoing nature makes us excellent companion dogs.
Though, we were initially bred as working dogs.
One of our top qualities is that we are exceptional swimmers. We often reach between 60-70 kilos; some are even closer to 80 kilos. But despite our massive size, we move elegantly and efficiently in the water.
Newfoundland dogs are commonly used as rescue dogs because we love to swim far and long.
Gentle giant
Our breed is known for its gentle and friendly nature. We are not stressed or nervous and are great with children.
How much activity does a Newfoundland dog need?
Newfoundland dogs are calm and easygoing creatures, but that does not mean we do not need exercise. Take me on a walk as often as you can.
We are far from long-distance runners, but as mentioned, we are exceptional swimmers. We never say 'no, thanks' to go swimming. For us, it is the perfect form of exercise.
This is how Newfoundland dogs sound when we "talk."
How much we bark depends on several factors, including personality and upbringing.
Some individuals rarely bark, while others often use their voices to communicate.
However, when a Newfoundland dog first chooses to use its voice, you can be sure that you hear it. Our bark is deep and loud - you can listen to an example in the video below:
Relatively simple fur maintenance
As a rule, it will be necessary to brush our coat regularly, which can take some time because we have a lot of hair.
When we shed, more care is required.
Find a serious breeder.
Newfoundland dogs have a history of hip and elbow dysplasia, eyelid problems (which can irritate the eyes), wet eczema, allergies, and heart problems.
Most of us will not be affected by these problems, but some individuals are less lucky. Make sure to research to find a serious breeder. Focus on finding a healthy dog if you are considering getting a Newfoundland dog.
Healthy Newfoundland dogs have a life expectancy of 8-10 years.
