Rhodesian Ridgebacks are majestic, smart, loyal, and companion dogs.
Rhodesian Ridgebacks are majestic, smart, loyal, and companion dogs.
They are big dogs that express strength and self-confidence. But do not be fooled by their appearance, on the inside they are sensitive dogs that require gentle but firm care.
The breed is known to grow fast but matures late, so potential owners must prepare to own a huge puppy. A Rhodesian Ridgeback has the potential to become an excellent companion family dog, forging strong bonds with their humans.
«African lion dog»
The Rhodesian Ridgeback was created in South Africa when farmers needed dogs to hunt animals and guard property. The breed needed to be able to withstand extreme heat. Not least, the dog had to be a good friend to the whole family.
By mixing European dogs, including the Greyhound, Bloodhound, Mastiff and Great Dane, with African dogs, the result was the Rhodesian Ridgeback.
These dogs had a distinctive ridge (a special layer of hair that grows in the opposite direction of the other hairs) on their backs. And to the great delight of the breeders, it turned out that we were exceptional hunters.
For a long time, these dogs hunted wild animals in Africa, including lions, which has given them the nickname "African Lion Hound".
Today, the hunting characteristics are less prominent, but many of the original qualities still exist in them.

Rhodesian Ridgeback is a family dog
This breed is an excellent watchdog that will alert its owners they discover something suspicious.
Their intelligence is staggering, which is useful but can make them seem a bit demanding. Rhodesian ridgeback owners must therefore be consistent in their upbringing. Socialization from the puppy stage is a big advantage.
It is worth mentioning that Rhodesian Ridgebacks are incredibly fast and agile dogs. They move elegantly in most terrains. And they have to move often. Suppose you want a dog of this breed. In that case, you have to offer them large amounts of activity and exercise– not only physical activity but also mental stimuli.
As you probably understand, they are best suited for active families who do many long hikes. Though, after a long day out, they love to lie on the couch and relax for hours.
To the family, Rhodesian ridgeback dogs are very loyal. Towards strangers, on the other hand, they may be somewhat reserved and uninterested.
Healthy and fresh
Rhodesian Ridgeback is generally in good health.
There is a low incidence of both hip and elbow dysplasia. However, there is a growing tendency for skin problems and ear infections in the breed.
Some puppies are born with so-called dermoid sinuses, which are dangerous growths on the back. In the past, these puppies were killed, but today most can be operated on and recovered.
Healthy individuals have a life expectancy of 10-12 years.
