Whippet
Are you looking for a medium-sized greyhound suitable for first-time owners? Then you should read more about the Whippet.
We are lively, enduring, adventurous, and fast dogs. We are even one of the fastest breeds in the world. Outdoors, we are like four-legged torpedoes!
When we are indoors, we are quite the opposite. This natural 'on and off button' makes us fit as family dogs.
Keywords that describe us include friendly, affectionate, and stable. As long as we get to be with our owners, we are happy and satisfied.
We are social animals. We especially enjoy being others of our kind. It is common for Whippet owners to have several dogs of the same breed. Despite our medium-high activity drive, a Whippet can easily become a happy apartment dog.
However, be aware that we do not like to be alone for hours, especially if there are no other dogs around us. We recommend having a fenced-off area available, as we tend to have sporadic outbursts of energy.
The Whippet's activity needs
Whippet dogs have a medium level of activity, which means that we are well suited for different lifestyles!
We do not need the longest walks, but we have some requirements that must be fulfilled to keep us happy. If ignored, we could develop destructive behavior.
One of our greatest strengths is our running power! Please grant us the option to utilize it daily. In other words, we are well suited for people who love to jog and run, preferably at a high pace. If our owners are not fond of running, we should at least get the opportunity to run in a fenced-off area.
Essential to practice summoning - Whippets can run away
Due to our strong hunting instinct, we should always be kept on a leash when on walks. We will not hesitate to run after animals if we get the scent of them. We love chasing squirrels and rabbits!
It is vital to practice summons as early as possible!
Whippet as a puppy
Little barking
One of the reasons we work well as apartment dogs is because we rarely bark.
Because of this, we do not function well as guard dogs. But in return, we appear friendly and welcoming, even when strangers visit.
The Whippet's relationship with other animals
Whippet dogs will usually get along with other dogs. We can also get along with other pets, such as cats. But due to our strong hunting instinct, there are no guarantees. There have been cases where Whippets have killed cats, although this rarely happens.
A Whippet may need supervision when in the presence of other animals. It may also be an advantage to introduce us from an early stage.
Little grooming is required.
Our coat is short and requires little care. You should brush it regularly.
Healthy breed
Whippet is generally a healthy breed with health issues. But, like with all dogs, certain health challenges can occur. For a Whippet, the most common is cryptorchidism, a condition in which one or both testicles are missing.
Healthy individuals usually live between 12-15 years.
